Ellis Arrest and Booking Roles
Ellis counted 1,958 residents in the 2020 Census. That was enough to rank second among the county's incorporated cities. The Ellis Police Department runs a round-the-clock municipal operation staffed by five full-time certified officers. The Ellis County Sheriff's Office covers the whole county and runs the booking facility in Hays. That split shapes every record search. City officers write the police event reports. When someone is detained, the county jail takes them in and creates the booking record. The jail also books people for other municipal, county, state, and outside agencies. So a name on the county list doesn't tell you Ellis Police made the bust. A missing name doesn't rule out a city arrest either.
Where Ellis Busted Mugshots Appear
Ellis publishes no official city arrest log, daily bulletin, or booking-photo page. The Town Crier newsletter sometimes prints monthly counts of police activity. Numbers alone name no one. Start with the official city and county channels before turning to outside publishers.
| Channel | Scope | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Ellis Police | Official city agency and records contact | No person-level blotter or photo feed |
| Ellis County Jail Log | Official current county custody | No photo, charges, bond, court date, release, or arresting agency |
| Hays Post | Secondary regional logs and reports | Not a complete live Ellis feed |
| Recently Booked | Unofficial 30-day county presentation | May be incomplete or stale; photo not assured |
| Busted Newspaper | Unofficial county cards and city labels | A label does not establish arrest jurisdiction |
Private mugshot cards come with real drawbacks. Some keep a stale charge on file long after the case closed. Others mix Ellis County jail data with state prison records, which muddies the picture. Go straight to the district court instead. Its disposition files tell you how each matter actually ended, and they beat any busted-mugshot card you will find online.
Finding Who Was Busted Ellis
The judicial district posts an Ellis County Sheriff's Office Alpha Prisoner Listing. Think of it as a timestamped PDF that replaces itself with each update. Each entry lists a name, booking number and time, date of birth, sex, race, inmate number, housing, and an agency header. It is not real-time. No verified public archive of past versions exists.
- Open Court Dockets, select “Ellis County Jail Log,” and read the print timestamp.
- Search the PDF by surname, then compare the date of birth, booking number, booking date, inmate number, and housing field.
- Treat no match cautiously. The person may have been cited and released, bonded out, transferred, booked elsewhere, entered under a spelling variation, or never jailed.
- Ask Ellis Police for the city incident or arrest report. Ask the sheriff for the booking sheet and any releasable electronic intake photograph.
- Use the district record search for a filed case and final disposition.
Ellis Busted Record Custodians
City code names the police chief as custodian of police department records. The city clerk serves as the local freedom-of-information officer and main records office. Any written request should describe the record you want in reasonable detail. Costs can climb past $25, so expect an estimate or prepayment. The official Ellis Police page is the verified starting point for city business. Its anonymous-tip form and Facebook link won't work as an arrest lookup or warrant check.

The department page gives you the city's contact channels. The jail agency, separately, holds the county booking image. Keep each request precise and aimed at the right custodian.

The city's general photocopy rate is $0.25 per page. No fee sheet exists for police reports or booking photos, and no turnaround is guaranteed. Ask for an estimate instead of assuming the copy price applies. For a photograph, send a separate written request to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office. Include the person's name, the booking date, and any booking or inmate number you know.
Why Ellis Has No Blotter
No city blotter does not mean no arrests. The Town Crier bundles a month of police work into one summary. That bulk format can't show whether a person was arrested, cited, transported, or booked. A Hays Post story has republished an Ellis Police monthly report now and then, but those pieces never build into a reliable person-level search. Ellis County also lacks an official 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, or weekly arrest feed. There is no released-booking archive either.
The Alpha Prisoner Listing's booking-date column covers only people still held on the current version. It can show an older booking for someone in custody. Yet it may miss a same-day arrest followed by a quick release. For past events, contact the record custodian directly instead of refreshing the PDF.
Record flow: Ellis Police event → county jail booking when detained → court filing when charges proceed → court disposition.
Ellis Busted News Sources
Hays Post is the strongest regional source for arrest news. It posts near-weekly logs for Hays Police and the Ellis County Sheriff, plus FHSU reports. Its sheriff coverage is countywide. So verify the agency, location, and date window against Ellis itself. Citizen Journal runs what look like weekly Ellis County Jail summaries built from automated Media Arrest Reports. These are early intake write-ups. They often skip a clear city label.
The Ellis Town Crier plays a different role. Its monthly police summaries are aggregates, not named booking cards or a photo gallery. Hays Daily News covers the region but has no recurring arrest-log section. A specific incident story helps only when its agency and facts line up with your event. For the wider picture, see Mugshots in the News.
Private county pages set their own rules for keeping and correcting content. Busted Newspaper shows recent cards and itself warns that details may change or be inaccurate. Recently Booked says it covers the latest 30 days with several daily refreshes. Its live Ellis County page also noted the county supplies no mugshot images. Mugshots.com is a mostly stale archive of 2011-2015 filters and KDOC-derived profiles. None of these substitutes for a court outcome or an official city file.
